Today, we’re talking about the quarterback position for 2023. I’m going to tell you why I think we’re going to compare the two, Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, and I’m going to tell you who I think should be the starter. All right, so let’s get into it. Everybody’s wondering, you know, who’s gonna take control of this position. Devin Brown, highly touted redshirt freshman, just had…oh boy, he’s had 15 snaps on the year in two games. Kyle McCord, just 67 and seven games, and we do know he had the start last year in 2021 when CJ had had his injured shoulder. That was against Akron, so does it really count? I don’t know, but we do know that they go against the Buckeye defense every day in practice. So, probably the best defense they’re gonna face, at least in most college football and mostly the Big Ten, for sure.

First of all, let’s talk about Kyle McCord. Let’s talk about him coming out of high school. He’s a high five-star, 98.5, 8 composite, 6’3″, 215, out of Philly. We know Marvin Harrison’s teammate was a state champion. So, here was his Scouting Report coming out of high school: wide-shouldered frame, good height and size, strong arm, accurate, spins the ball well, he’s poised under pressure, great leadership qualities, plays with a high IQ, can throw a 15-yard out on-line, touch throw over linebackers on intermediate routes, has quick release, good arm angle, can fit the ball into tight windows, accurate throwing on the run, moves in pocket, extends plays, reminds me of Justin Fields. We need to continue to develop escapability. Sounds a lot like CJ Stroud. Yeah, more consistency needed on deep balls. Multi-year starter at a top 15 program in the country, that says something to me. Projects to be an early NFL draft pick, that says something to me too.

So, for comparison’s sake, let’s talk Devin Brown. Again, almost a five-star, he was just a few hundreds of a thousandths of a decimal point from being a five-star, composite 6’2.5″, 196. Very similar in size, just slightly leaner, I guess.

His high school scouting report goes like this: Long wiry frame with room to add muscle mass, carries 190 pounds well and continues to fill out. That doesn’t matter. Dynamic quarterback with a basketball background shows very good arm strength and zip on his passes. Flash’s ability to make off-platform throws without losing velocity distributes to all levels of the field. Looks extremely comfortable rolling out to space, displays good timing and anticipation over in the middle. Mechanically sound and quick release of the ball, athletic and tough enough to plan his foot and gain yards with his legs. A little bit different profile than what we’ve had recently. Could continue to improve decision-making and tendency to chase the big play. Okay, you can kind of teach that into a quarterback. Needs to improve his touch and loft on tighter windows. Different potential multi-year starter at elite Power Five level and second-day NFL draft projection. Okay, so those profiles are slightly different. Again, we’re talking, you know, just hair-splitting hairs here.

So, what do you guys think? I’m asking your opinion. Who do you think is better? You got who is your better option? Do you go with McCord because he has that one game experience, an extra year in the program? Of course, slightly better profile according to what Ryan Day likes. If you think about that, like CJ Stroud, you know, tight window throws, drops them in a bucket, can get throws over the linebacker. Needs to improve on his escapability, but he, like Justin Fields, McCord can extend a play by shuffling around in the pocket. You know, he was a finalist at the Elite 11, and like I said, his arm strength and accuracy are already NFL caliber, and he has the size. He’s like a mirror image in size of CJ. You know, 6-3, 215. I’m not sure. I wouldn’t, I would definitely not say he’s a statue back there, you know, but on dropbacks, he just needs to, you know, pull it either pull the trigger or get out and pick up some yards. That’s the, you know, that’s what we complained about CJ for two years, you know, take the cheap five to seven yards if you can, if nobody’s open, you know, pull it down and go. And McCord has shown strong work ethic, natural leadership. That’s a big one with Ryan Day, and I can be sure of that. And I think his time having the full extra year in Columbus, you know, around the guys, around the team, around the coaches really helps him. And I don’t know how Devin Brown takes this job. I think it’s a stretch to believe Devin Brown’s just going to step up and take this job. You know, he’s got Devin Brown has a ton of potential but lacks experience, lacks the time in the program.

So, yeah, again, 15 snaps total, that’s what he’s had. Strong arm and mobile, but he, yeah, I think he needs to develop more of his pocket passing ability. Maybe he’s too much of a runner, you know what I’m saying? I’m not saying he’s a dual-threat guy or just a running quarterback. I’m not saying that, but I think maybe he needs to work on the throwing aspect of being a quarterback, work on his accuracy, things like that. So, maybe he’s still adjusting to the college game. So, I think McCord is the clear-cut starter right now. Now, this could all blow up if there’s an injury in spring practice or whatever, but I’m going Kyle McCord. I’m team Kyle McCord.
